Extreme Heat and Air Quality: A Double Threat for Andhra Pradesh
In a recent study, researchers from the Centre for Ocean, River, Atmosphere and Land Sciences (CORAL) at IIT Kharagpur have uncovered a concerning link between heatwaves and air pollution in Andhra Pradesh. This revelation adds a new dimension to our understanding of the region's environmental challenges.
The Heatwave-Ozone Connection
What makes this study particularly fascinating is its focus on the often-overlooked impact of heatwaves on air quality. Prolonged hot spells, as the researchers explain, disrupt the natural sea-breeze circulation, preventing the flow of cleaner marine air and trapping pollutants close to the ground. This phenomenon, combined with intense sunlight, creates a perfect storm for ozone formation.
Rising Ozone Levels
The findings are quite alarming. During heatwaves, ozone levels in the East Coast climatic region, including coastal Andhra Pradesh, increase significantly, often surpassing the World Health Organization's guideline of 70 micrograms per cubic metre. In major heatwave years, this rise can be as high as 5.5 to 7 micrograms per cubic metre, primarily due to stagnant atmospheric conditions.

Rising temperatures, coupled with emissions from vehicles, industries, and power plants, create a complex environmental scenario. The study highlights how these elements converge to pose a dual threat of extreme heat and air pollution.

For coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh, which typically enjoy the cooling effects of sea winds, this disruption in air circulation during heatwaves is a cause for concern. Cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, known for their coastal locations, may experience short-term spikes in ozone pollution during extreme weather events, putting vulnerable populations at risk.
Long-Term Health Implications
One thing that immediately stands out is the potential long-term health consequences. Elevated ozone levels, even after heatwaves subside, increase the risk of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This is particularly worrying for children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
