Amoc Collapse: Europe's Climate at Risk (2026)

The potential collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a ticking time bomb for Europe's climate, and yet, we seem woefully unprepared to address this imminent threat. It's a scenario that mirrors the hypothetical asteroid impact, where we'd invest billions to prevent disaster, but when it comes to a real-world, more probable threat, we're hesitant to commit even a fraction of that amount.

The AMOC is a vast ocean current system, acting as a climate regulator, impacting everything from agriculture to infrastructure and culture. Its weakening, projected under current climate change, will bring about radical weather changes and sea-level rise in Europe. However, the lack of consensus on the timing and speed of this process, due to varying climate models and limited understanding of the AMOC's physics, leaves policymakers in a bind.

The situation is further complicated by the potential for AMOC weakening to lead to a collapse, which could accelerate climate change in Europe by a factor of ten. This is a scenario that we're ill-equipped to handle, given the challenges we already face with the current rate of change.

What's more, the scientific community is divided on whether the AMOC has already weakened, with many studies relying on approximations due to a lack of direct historical measurements. This has led to confusion and uncertainty, which is exacerbated by the absence of long-term AMOC observations.

The monitoring of the AMOC began just two decades ago, thanks to the efforts of a few visionary researchers. These measurements have significantly improved our understanding of the AMOC, but the funding for such initiatives is extremely vulnerable. Several monitoring programs are at risk of being defunded, and with the Trump administration proposing budget cuts to key agencies, the situation is dire.

The recently launched European OceanEye initiative is a step in the right direction, but it's not enough. We need sustained and robust funding to ensure continuous AMOC monitoring. For just five cents per person per year, the EU can maintain a critical climate monitoring system that impacts our daily lives and enhances our resilience to the climate crisis.

It's time for the EU, the UK, and other international partners to recognize the urgency of this issue and collaborate to secure long-term AMOC monitoring. The cost is minimal compared to the potential consequences, and the benefits are immeasurable. We cannot afford to be caught unprepared when it comes to our planet's climate.
